Stepping Towards Better Foot Health for Diabetics in Barbados

Diabetes is a growing health concern in Barbados, and one of its most serious complications is foot injuries leading to amputations. Many diabetics struggle to find proper footwear, which is essential for protecting their feet from wounds and infections.

To help address this issue, Samaritan Feet, in partnership with Orthofeet, has donated over 4,000 pairs of specialized orthopedic shoes to diabetics in Barbados. These shoes, which are podiatrist-approved and designed for diabetic foot care, will help prevent foot injuries and support healthier mobility.

This donation is the first of its kind from Samaritan Feet and Orthofeet in Barbados, marking a significant step towards preventative diabetic foot care in the region.

A Donation with a Difference

This project isn’t just about handing out shoes—it’s about ensuring the right fit and providing education on foot health. So far, over 28 volunteers have been trained as certified shoe fitters and screeners.

Each diabetic will be assessed using the 60-second inlows Diabetic Foot Screening Tool, which helps identify their level of foot risk (low, medium, or high) and guides the selection of appropriate footwear.

Recipients will also receive diabetic foot care tips and information to help them maintain healthy feet and prevent complications in the future.

Who Can Receive These Shoes?

Diabetes can cause loss of sensation in the feet and poor blood circulation, making it difficult to detect injuries. Without the right shoes, simple problems like blisters, calluses, or small cuts can become serious infections, sometimes leading to amputation.

This initiative ensures that each pair of shoes is properly fitted to the recipient, helping to reduce the risk of foot injuries and complications.

To qualify for a pair of orthopedic shoes, individuals must:

Step 1

Be diagnosed with diabetes

Step 2

Undergo a screening and shoe fitting

Step 3

Preferably be at medium to high risk for foot complications

Partners

Samaritan Feet and Orthofeet have pledged their continued support, making this a lasting initiative in Barbados.

This initiative is made possible through the strong partnerships of several community health organizations

These partners play a vital role in identifying individuals in need, conducting screenings and fittings, providing ongoing diabetic foot care, and offering essential volunteer support to ensure the success of this initiative.

This donation is just the first step towards a long-term solution for footwear suitable for diabetics in Barbados. The goal is to establish a permanent supply of orthopedic shoes through a dedicated diabetic foot care program, ensuring that those in need always have access to the right footwear.
